What it is
Lens RE73415, held in a web. It holds 3,244 filapixels — one for every sentence of this site's writing, 34,806 words across 9 scenes and 157 pieces. A lightpen excites the material where you point it, and the object gives up what it holds in a notation that was not written for you.
It should not have survived screening. Residue of taint let it through, which is the green in the crystal's interior and the reason it was pulled out and read at all.
The object, and what it does not encode
…opens it to reveal a crystalline fractalanch, two inches long, shaped like the antler of an imaginary animal, all branches and nubs.
That sentence is the whole specification. The object is built from it and from nothing else: one beam that curves as it rises, tines leaving it at irregular heights, forking irregularly — sometimes a lone tine, sometimes a two-way fork, sometimes a flattened palmate fan of three or four — thickening toward the base, every branch ending in a blunt nub. 144 segments in four generations (the beam 9, then 18, 39 and 78) and 30 nubs, inside a sphere of radius 0.86 in the units it is built in.
The proportions are not derived from anything, and are not presented as if they were. They were chosen by rendering the object and looking at it until it read as an antler. That is how they were arrived at, and saying so is worth more here than a citation would be.
Where a filapixel sits on the object encodes nothing. Not the sentence's order, not its length, not which scene it came from. Positions are a seeded draw over the object's arc length — deterministic, so it is the same lens on every visit, because it is this lens rather than a lens — and they carry no information at all.
This is a subtraction, and it is the release. Two earlier versions of this scene mapped the corpus into the geometry: a chrysanthemum whose angle was reading order and whose petal length was sentence length, then a branch whose thickness was Murray's law and whose branch angles were the golden angle. Both were rigour supplied where a subject was needed. Every one of those mappings was real and checkable and none of them was a reason, and both times the result was a diagram rather than an object. A lens does not encode what it holds. It holds it.
The field, and why it is not a sky
The lens is not in front of a backdrop. It is in a web — filaments across the whole frame, brighter where they cross — and the web is the same kind of object as the lens at a different magnification. The fractalanch is a fragment of the thing the field is.
The form is one structure standing for two, and they are alike for a reason rather than by resemblance. The cosmic web and neural tissue converge because both are networks built by matter falling along gradients toward nodes, and the similarity has been measured and published rather than merely noticed. In neither is a node a point on black: a cluster sits where filaments meet, and the strands are as visible as the knot.
It is one web, and that is checked rather than asserted. A nearest-neighbour graph is not connected on its own — over this point set it falls into 218 pieces, the largest holding 22% of the nodes — so the pieces are joined by taking, repeatedly, the shortest strand from each piece to any other. From a filapixel inside the crystal every node in the field is reachable along strands; the farthest is 398 hops away, 34 units out. There is no seam between the object and the field because there is nowhere for one to be.
3,244 near nodes — the sentences — and 4,622 in the field, in 240 knots strung along filaments. 13,808 strands. Node degree runs 2 to 9, mean 3.51; nothing is isolated.
A junction is bright because strands meet there, and that is arithmetic rather than styling. Every strand is drawn as two segments meeting at a dark midpoint, bright at each end, and the drawing is additive — so a node where k strands meet is k bright ends summing on the same pixels. Nothing chooses the brightness of a junction. It is what k ends come to.
Nothing in the field is a disc, a sprite or a marker, and nothing in it responds to you — not to the camera, not to being pointed at, not to being looked at. That indifference is the point: it is what makes the lens's one response mean something.
But it carries, and it has its own traffic.
One reading in a hundred gets out. The other ninety-nine stay in the crystal; when one escapes, the excitation runs out along the strands, hop by hop, dimming as it goes, and reaches a hundred strands into the field before it dies. Inside the crystal the disturbance travels by straight-line distance, the way a disturbance in a solid does; out there it travels along the web, because out there the strands are the only distance there is. The odds are the site's own — the landing page has kept a one-in-a-hundred flicker since long before this scene existed.
And pulses cross the field on their own, every few seconds, going somewhere that has nothing to do with you: a front sweeping through the volume, lighting whatever it passes, sometimes passing through the lens on its way. A branch of a filament exists on the informational and the galactic scale at once, and on both of them things are connected whether or not anyone is looking — if only by gravity.
What the field is made of
Every distant point is a thing arriving from outside time.
A photon travels a null worldline: the spacetime interval between its emission and its absorption is zero, so no proper time elapses along it. The delay is entirely ours. It is a fact about being made of matter, in the forward stream, rather than a fact about the light.
Stated carefully, because the loose form of it — "photons experience no time" — is exactly the kind of true-sounding sentence that goes wrong on restatement. There is no valid inertial rest frame for a photon, so the precise claim is about the interval along a null path and not about anything a photon undergoes. What is being said here is the zero interval, and nothing more.
Which is why nothing in this field twinkles. Scintillation is caused by matter in the path: a star twinkles because the atmosphere it is seen through is turbulent, and a planet does not, because it is an extended source and averages the distortion across its own angular size. In a vacuum nothing is in the way. The field's whole claim is that nothing is in the way.

Two scenes are absent, and that is a fact about them rather than an omission. Harmonics publishes no writing of its own — it is a view of the connections between the other scenes. Outside publishes five power-source names and two origin labels, none of which are sentences.
The piece column is still counted and still true, and it no longer divides anything in the object. It was the middle rank the branch was built on. It is left here because it is a real fact about the corpus, not because the geometry uses it.
Where a sentence ends
Three rules were measured against each other before one was chosen. Blunt treats every full stop, question mark and exclamation mark as a boundary, so an ellipsis is three sentences. Prose treats neither an ellipsis nor an em-dash as a boundary. Beatwise treats an em-dash as a boundary, on the reasoning that a cut-off ends a unit of speech.
prose is what ships, because an interrupted or trailing line is one sentence: a writer trailing off has not finished three thoughts, they have not finished one. Across this corpus the three rules give 4,054, 4,047 and 4,191 units before filtering — a spread of 3.6%, small enough that the choice moves the count by about one part in thirty.
A unit has to be a sentence to be a filapixel. Four words or fewer with no terminal punctuation is not one — cataloguing marginalia, element labels, the names of things — and 508 such fragments are excluded.
The notation
A read filapixel transmits its own ordinal along the crystal, in unequal flashes. It is legible as transmission and never readable as text, which is deliberate: text travelling up the object would mean the reader was being addressed, and they are not. They are looking at somebody else's record.
The notation is base e. Under the standard radix-economy cost model — where the cost of representing a number is the radix multiplied by the number of digits — the optimal base is e, and 3, being the nearest integer, is almost always the most economical integer radix. Ternary computers were built on exactly this reasoning: the Setun, at Moscow State University, about fifty machines between 1958 and 1965. Binary is a compromise forced by transistors.
The cost model matters and is stated with the claim, because "base e is the most efficient radix" on its own is the kind of true-sounding sentence that goes wrong on restatement. Two properties of a non-integer radix earn their place beyond the argument. Representations are not unique — the digit set is larger than the base, so a value generally has several valid encodings and none is canonical. And nothing lands on a grid: powers of e are irrational, so the flashes never line up and the train has no beat.
A digit d is one flash lasting τ·e(d−1), so the three durations stand in the ratio 1 : e : e². Segments alternate lit and dark by place, most significant first, so the boundaries are the digit boundaries and nothing in the train is filler. τ is not chosen: it is the time the excitation's own travelling front takes to cross one shell width, so the transmission and the disturbance are the same event.
Worked, so it can be checked. Sentence 94 of 3,244 expands to:
94 = 1·e4 + 1·e3 + 2·e2 + 1·e1 + 1·e0 + 2·e-1 + 1·e-3 = 93.966
which is the digit string 11211201, most significant place e4, cut after 3 fractional places. The expansion does not terminate, so the recovered value is 93.966 against 94 — an error of 0.034, which is the truncation and not a mistake.
The ordinal is the sentence's place in the whole corpus, not within its scene. Earlier versions reported it within a limb, which was a fact about a structure the object no longer has.
Reading it
Point the lightpen at the crystal and the excitation spreads outward from where it lands, falling off with distance and dying after a few seconds. Straight-line distance, and symmetric in every direction — a change from both earlier versions, and the honest one. Those propagated along the structure and ran further toward later sentences than earlier ones, because reading order was in the geometry. It is not any more, and a disturbance in a solid does not know about reading order.
It also makes a sound, and the sound goes past you. Wind, made of metal. The source is noise through a filter that moves, which is what wind is rather than what a tone with vibrato is; that noise excites a bank of narrow resonators at non-integer ratios — 1 : 1.58 : 2.31 : 3.07 : 4.19 : 5.63 — which is the same mechanism that makes a bell or a struck sheet read as metal rather than as a string, except that nothing here is struck.
It passes. The pitch falls about 11% across the note, steepest in the middle, which is the real shape of the Doppler ratio for something crossing in front of you rather than a straight slide; the image sweeps from one side to the other at the same time. And it swells from nothing and goes: the envelope is zero at both ends, so there is no attack, because nothing is struck.
Sound and light are one event rather than two. The pass lasts exactly as long as the transmission it belongs to, and it sweeps in the direction the front travels on screen — taken from the strand's own direction through the real camera, so it still matches when you turn the object.
The lens is a neuron, and a neuron does not ring, it fires. The sound is conduction rather than percussion, which is why it is real-time DSP on the audio thread rather than a tone with a curve on its gain.
The source passage
"It was as we feared." "How did it get lost during screening?" — Untgract pulls down a lightpen, activates it, reads the object. A screen appears, reams of data. Then it goes in a jar on the bottom shelf, among thousands more, in various shapes.
A different passage from the same manuscript — a workbench, a computation, "a white fiber-optic chrysanthemum, each filapixel a moment in time, demarcated in the code of the Union" — was the source for the two earlier forms. It is retired rather than quietly dropped: it gave this scene its word for a lit fragment of text, and it is where the count came from that the corpus then overruled.
